D&D 5.5
As most of you are likely aware, the new edition of D&D will be landing this September. Many of you have also asked how this will be supported by TorontoDnD. Fair question! But before we can answer that there are a couple of points to keep in mind:
- Backwards Compatibility - Wizards has said that this edition will be backwards compatible with the 2014 version. It looks like this means that you will be able to play 5.0 characters alongside 5.5 characters in games that use the new rules, but not the other way around. However there is some doubt amongst the community as to how viable 5.0 characters will be in a mixed party using the new rules. We just are not yet sure just how nicely the two systems will actually play together and won’t know until we actually get the new books.
- Staggered Release - The Player’s Handbook lands in September, the Dungeons Master’s Guide in November and the Monster Manual in February. This means that we will be able to start creating characters before we have a full magic item list, and way before we have a list of monsters properly balanced for the 2024 version.
So what does all this mean? How will TorontoDnD support 5.5?
- Initial support will start in September when the PHB is available and be limited to Sidequest games. This will allow us to get a sense of what might be broken at our tables and to give GMs a sense of how to balance old monsters for the new character classes.
- After the DMG arrives in November we can get the magic items added to our database and potentially get the 5.5 PW up and running. Whether this means we simply add 5.5 options to our existing system or start a completely separate PW for 5.5 will depend on how well the two systems actually mesh. We will need books in hand and play testing under our belts before we know for sure.
So in short, once the PHB is out you will be able to play in 5.5 games at our Sidequest events, but PW support for 5.5 characters won’t be available until sometime later. That being said, we know that people will likely be pretty keen to start growing their 5,5 characters so we will make sure that this is available as early as we can.
Event Survey Reminder
Receiving honest feedback from players and GMs is critical to the health of our community. After every event you attend you should receive a survey. If you do not get the email they are also accessible in your profile menu under "Surveys". Please rest assured that any information you share is confidential and is not provided to anybody involved. If you leave negative feedback in regards to a GM or fellow participant we will not do anything that could identify you to that person. I cannot stress enough how important honest feedback is in our efforts to maintain a healthy community, so please complete these if you can, it really does make a difference!
Summer Social
Our summer social will be taking place on Friday July 26th at the Duke of York. In addition to the usual drinks and mingling there will be a town hall with the organizers, followed by D&D Olympics! Prizes, buttons and much more! This event is live now, you can grab your tickets here.
Thanks all, more to come soon!
