Please read below to make sure this workshop is right for you!

So, your brainchild of a villain is ready: a twisted aberrant horror from the void that feasts upon the weak-minded masses... and now you just have to figure out how your players get to it from the tavern.

~~~
Disclaimer: This workshop is geared towards DMs who already have some experience running D&D and are comfortable with the basics. If you have a few sessions under your belt and are looking to take the next step, this workshop is for you. We will not be spending much time on introductory topics like Initiative, Ability Checks, or reading statblocks. Instead, I’ll focus on how I approach writing and structuring one-shots, what has worked for me, and the advice I’ve picked up while running games in the TorontoD&D format. While I do not consider this the “one” way to write an adventure, this method has served me well and is an amalgamation of techniques I’ve learned from other DMs, along with lessons learned through plenty of my own mistakes and successes.
Things you will learn in this workshop:
This session will be in a more lecture/discussion format
  1. Developing a one-shot concept
    • Starting from a monster, villain, location, or encounter idea
    • Identifying the core premise of the adventure and working backwards from it
  2. Formatting a TorontoD&D one-shot
    • Structuring the adventure around TorontoD&D time limits
    • Using the PIECE format to give your adventure structure: Premise, Investigation, Encounter, Challenge, Endgame
  3. Building the adventure
    • Building the perfect one-shot sandwich: why the start and end are your biggest strengths
    • Connecting encounters and scenes together
    • Creating a flow to the adventure. Understanding the difference between linear and railroading.
  4. Pacing your one-shot
    • Understanding how much content actually fits into a session
    • Identifying what can be shortened, skipped, or expanded during play
    • Planning around the things players will inevitably spend way too much time doing
  5. Understanding the notes you need
    • Organizing information for use at the table
    • Knowing what needs to be written down and what does not
What you will need to bring:
- Something to take notes in/with if you so choose! i.e. notebook/paper/laptop (Pencils will be provided)
- If you have a one-shot, encounter, NPC, villain, puzzle, or other idea you are currently working on, feel free to bring it with you. We may have opportunities throughout the workshop to use some of your own ideas as examples.
- Enthusiasm!
