So, you’ve been behind the screen. You’ve tasted the power. You’ve held your players' lives in the palm of your hand... and now you’re ready to abuse that power responsibly.
~~~
Disclaimer: This workshop is geared towards DMs who already have some experience running D&D and are comfortable with the basics of running a game. If you have a few sessions under your belt and are looking to take the next step, this is the workshop for you. We will not be spending much time on introductory topics like Initiative, Ability Checks, or reading statblocks. Instead, we’ll focus on using those fundamentals to build stronger encounters, characters, and adventures. This workshop will be a little more lecture and discussion-heavy than the introductory workshop. We’ll be spending more time breaking down ideas, examples, and different approaches rather than constantly jumping into practical exercises.
A portion of the workshop will also be specifically geared towards running games for TorontoDND. We will go over how to format a TorontoDND one-shot, pace your adventure within the time available, and scale Combat Encounters for our different level brackets.
Things you will learn in this workshop:
**Depending on time, some topics may be skipped. I will be asking the table what topics matter most at the start of the session to make sure we prioritize ones everyone wants to learn about.**
- Formatting a TorontoDND one-shot
- Pacing your sessions
- Improvisation
- Running Memorable Villains
- Running Interesting Combat
- Scaling Combat for TorontoDND levels 1-4, 5-8, and 9-12
- Customizing and designing Legendary Actions and Lair Actions
- Utilizing the room!
- What Would the Monster Do? (WWMD?)
- Developing NPCs
- Handling Exploration
- Running Ability Challenges
There is no single correct way to DM, and the goal of this workshop is not to give you a giant list of rules you need to follow. Instead, I want to give you a larger toolbox to pull from when preparing or running your games and hopefully a few new tricks to torment your players with along the way.
What you will need to bring:
- Something to take notes in/with if you so choose. Pencils will be provided.
- If you have a one-shot, encounter, NPC, villain, puzzle, or other idea you are currently working on, feel free to bring it with you. We may have opportunities throughout the workshop to use some of your own ideas as examples.
Should you have any questions prior to the workshop, please feel free to message me on Discord. You should be able to find me by searching my name.
