PW 2024 Preview

As of Feb 1st we will be moving to the new D&D 2024 rules. Here are the big changes to the PW system:

D&D 2024 Ruleset Exclusivity

As of February 1st will be using the D&D2024 rules exclusively for the Persistent World (PW) system. This includes classes, subclasses, species, backgrounds, feats, items, spells etc. As of this writing, we are only supporting options found in the new Free Rules, Player's Handbook and Dungeon Master's Guide. If there is an option or rule that is not in those sources, it is by definition not supported. For character creation you can find a complete list of all legal options here. As new sources are released our rules committee will evaluate the content and get it added to our system as quickly as possible.

Character Registration

When registering your character, you will now have two options:

  1. Create your own character: Register a character you’ve designed yourself. When you choose this option you will be asked to provide several details including your class, species, subspecies, background etc. You will also select your attribute scores in much the same way as previously. The big difference is that we are collecting a bit more information. This will help us reduce the number of non-legal builds that players make by limiting the acceptable options.
  2. Choose a pre-generated character: Select from a variety of pre-built characters we’ve prepared to get started quickly. If you select this option you just have to name your character and you are all set. Additionally, you will be able to download a package that includes .pdf character sheets for levels one through five, along with suggestions for spending your gold and choosing spells etc. Some of these characters will require you have a copy of the 2024 Player’s Handbook, others will be usable with just the free rules. In either case this will be clearly indicated.

Due to the nature of our games, we have to place some limits on character options. Before or while you create your character you can make sure that the options you want are legal for TorontoDND games be checking the list of playable options here. This includes backgrounds, classes and subclasses, feats, magic items, species & spells.

Applying Sessions

As in the previous system, after you have attended any event you will be able to apply your session to a character that is at or below the max level of the game that was played. In the new system, when your character levels up and a choice is required you will be prompted to provide certain information. This will apply to subclasses, feats and ASI improvements etc. Having this information lets us better understand what people are playing, and as mentioned above, can also be used to make sure people are playing legal character builds.

One other major change you will notice is that instead of receiving treasure points as a reward you will now be receiving gold pieces. All magic items are now purchased with this currency instead. This allows for a more intuitive purchase system and for us to make more granular cost adjustments for over or underpowered items. You can find a complete list of all the magic items and their costs in the list of allowable options.

Lastly, level brackets have been moved to line up with proficiency bonus improvements, and the number of sessions required to level up in a bracket is now consistent.

Equippable Items
Range Gold Awarded Sessions to Level Up Permanent Items Healing Potions Consumables
L1 - L4 500 gp 1 2 2 2
L5 - L8 1000 gp 2 4 4 4
L9 - L12 2000 gp 3 6 6 6
L13 - L16 4000 gp 4 8 8 8
L17 - L20 8000 gp 5 10 10 10

Resurrection

Previously if your character died you would need to have a party cleric cast a spell to bring you back. This was not a very reliable method of returning from the other side, so the Necromancy Guild has recently started offering their services for hire. If your character dies in a session, their estate still receives their rewards. You can spend the gold earned to hire the Necromancy Guild to retrieve your PC’s corpse and bring you back to life. If you don’t want to spend all the gold on resurrection, then for a lower cost you can roll the dice and be reincarnated as a random species instead. When you choose this option the species will be randomly selected by our system, you do not get to choose.

Level Range Resurrection Cost Reincarnation Cost
L1 - L4 500 gp 375 gp
L5 - L8 1000 gp 750 gp
L9 - L12 2000 gp 1500 gp
L13 - L16 4000 gp 3000 gp
L17 - L20 8000 gp 6000 gp

Inventory

On our site you will have the option of equipping items up to the limit for the bracket your character is in (see grid). Doing this will let your DM know what you are bringing to the game.

Additionally, if you have consumables in your inventory you will be able to easily mark them as consumed by clicking a single button. This will also work with magic items that have finite charges like the Necklace of Fireballs etc.

After your session you will receive an event survey as usual, but it will also have a reminder to mark off any consumables you used with quick and easy links for you to do so.

Converting 5.0 Characters

Because of the different character options between the two rulesets, it is not possible to convert characters from 5.0 to 5.5. Instead, you will be able to convert your 5.0 characters into the session credits that were used to create them. You can then use those credits to create any character or characters you like using the new options.

Although the 5.5 rules currently have less options than the 5.0 books, WOTC will certainly be releasing more sources on a regular basis. As they do the rules committee will work to get them into our system as quickly as possible. If you would prefer to wait to convert your 5.0 characters until more suitable options are available you can absolutely do so.
